When I bought my first used car, I thought I was being smart, saving money, comparing listings, and asking all the right questions. But I still made a few mistakes that cost me time and peace of mind.
So if you’re thinking about buying a used car, here are five things I wish I’d known before signing the paperwork.
Does the vehicle have a clean Carfax? That means it hasn’t been in any major accidents, hasn’t suffered flood or fire damage, and doesn’t have a salvage title. The condition report is your first line of defense, it tells the real story of the car’s past and helps you avoid hidden issues that could show up later.
A well-maintained car will tell you everything you need to know just by looking at it. Check for consistent oil changes, no warning lights, rust-free parts, and a clean engine bay. If the seller can’t provide maintenance records or if the car looks neglected, take that as a red flag.
Online listings can make any car look amazing, but don’t trust the pictures alone. When comparing vehicles, make sure you’re looking at the out-the-door cost (including taxes and fees) and ask for the current condition of the vehicle. A lower price upfront doesn’t always mean a better deal.
Dealerships that offer warranties are confident in the quality of their vehicles. Avoid places that sell cars “as-is” because once you drive off the lot, any problem becomes your responsibility. A free warranty shows that the dealership stands behind its cars, both in word and in action.
This one’s huge. Buying from a dealership that inspects and reconditions every car can save you from a lot of surprises down the road. These extra steps ensure the vehicle is safe, reliable, and ready for you, not just polished up for the sale.
Buying a used car doesn’t have to be intimidating. With the right questions, the right research, and the right dealership, it can actually be a great experience. At MATS, every car we sell is inspected, reconditioned, and backed by transparency, so you can drive away confident in your decision.
